Profile

Born on January 4, 1932, in Huesca, Spain, filmmaker Carlos Saura grew up in Madrid. His work explored Spanish society and politics under Francisco Franco and was often censored. La prima Angelica was released in entirety to theaters, but resulted in bomb attacks. After Franco’s death in 1975, Saura’s films transitioned into flamenco-dance dramas, which often had long dance sequences without words.
