Carl David Anderson was born on September 3, 1905, in New York City. In 1930, he graduated with a Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology. He studied X-ray photoelectrons and later studied gamma rays and cosmic rays. He and Victor Francis Hess received a Nobel Prize for Physics in 1936 for discovering positrons, positively charged particles the same size as electrons.
