César Augusto Sandino biography

Nicaraguan guerrilla leader César Augusto Sandino was born in 1893. He took up arms in support of Vice President Juan Bautista Sacasa when he claimed presidency. U.S. Marines intervened and Sandino withdrew to the mountains. When the Marines left in 1933, Sandino was invited to meet with the head of the National Guard, but was murdered by them instead. He became the hero of the Sandinistas who held government from 1979 to 1990.
