Buddy Rich was born in Brooklyn, New York, on September 30 (some sources state June 30), 1917. Nicknamed "Baby Taps, the Drum Wonder," Rich was a child prodigy in vaudeville shows. Before he formed his own bands, the musician played in swing bands with Artie Shaw and Tommy Dorsey. He became known for his exceptional drumming speed. He died in Los Angeles, California, on April 2, 1987.
