Born on June 1, 1801, in Whitingham, Vermont, Brigham Young was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormonism) in 1832. In 1834, he joined in the march to Missouri to help dispossessed Mormons regain their lands. Young next selected Salt Lake City as a gathering place for the Mormons and remained there for the rest of his life, dispatching missions to California, Arizona, Nevada, Idaho and Wyoming. He died in Salt Lake City, Utah, on August 29, 1877.
