Boris Pasternak was a Russian poet and novelist whose Doctor Zhivago helped win him the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1958, but it was a controversial work in Russia. Pasternak’s main livelihood was translating, and his work included renderings of William Shakespeare, among others. In 1987 the Union of Soviet Writers posthumously reinstated Pasternak, giving him legitimacy in his home country.
