Synopsis

Birgit Nilsson was born in Karup, Sweden. Following her 1946 debut, she sang with the Stockholm Royal Opera and at Bayreuth Festivals. She studied at the Stockholm Royal Academy of Music. She was the leading Wagnerian soprano of that period. She sang at most of the great houses and festivals of the world, and her repertoire included Verdi, Puccini, and Strauss. She retired from the stage in 1982.

She sang at most of the great houses and festivals of the world, and her repertoire included Verdi, Puccini, and Strauss. She retired from the stage in 1982.
