Athlete and American football coach. Born William Ernest Walsh on November 30, 1931, in Los Angeles, Bill Walsh played football for and graduated from San Jose State University in the 1950s.
He later served as an assistant coach with the Oakland Raiders, Cincinnati Bengals and San Diego Chargers. Walsh, nicknamed "The Genius," coached the 49ers for 10 years (1979??88), winning Super Bowls XVI, XIX, and XXIII with the team in the 1980's. He was coach of the year twice, and inducted into the Pro Football Hall Of Fame in 1993.
Walsh's son, Steve, an ABC News reporter, died of leukemia in May 2002. He was only 46. Walsh himself went public with his own battle with Leukemia in November 2006, saying he had been diagnosed in 2004. The legendary San Francisco 49ers former head coach died on July 30, 2007. He was 75 years old.
