Benjamin Cardozo, a liberal Supreme Court Justice appointed by Herbert Hoover in 1932, was a founder of the American Law Institute and a renowned legal essayist. His rulings, both on the New York Supreme Court and later on the U.S. Supreme court, helped to shape American common law and American tort law. He was also instrumental in upholding the federal Social Security program.
