Benedict XIII biography

Profile

Benedict XIII (born Pedro de Luna in 1328) was made cardinal in 1375. When the Western Schism began in 1378, Benedict gave his allegiance to Pope Clement VII, and was elected to succeed him in 1394 with the understanding that he would step down if needed to end the division in the church. He refused to step down, even after being deposed in 1409. Benedict XIII continued as antipope until 1422.
