Australian physician Barry J. Marshall studied a spiral-shaped bacteria found in the stomach lining of patients with ulcers. Along with fellow scientist J. Robin Warren, he discovered that this bacteria, Helicobacter pylori, was responsible for ulcers and gastritis, so they could be successfully treated with antibiotics. Marshall and Warren won a Nobel Prize in 2005 for this research.
