Antonio Guzmán Fernández was born on February 12, 1911, in La Vega, Dominican Republic, going on to become a leading member of the Dominican Revolutionary Party. He was secretary of agriculture under the Juan Bosch administration and was elected president in 1978, making strides in stabilizing the economy and repairing infrastructure through facing controversy. He committed suicide on July 4, 1982.
