Anton Denikin was a General who led the anti-Bolshevik forces during the Russian Civil War (1918-1920). Born the son of a retired army officer, Denikin's family was respected but poor. By the outbreak of World War I, Denikin had risen in rank. In 1917, Denikin supported the coup d'état of his commander, Kornilov, and was imprisoned with him. The two escaped; Denikin later immigrated to the U.S.
