Benedict XIV (Bernard Garnier) was made pope by a splinter group of cardinals in 1425. As there was already an antipope, Benedict XIV became counter-antipope.
Bernard Garnier was elected pope in 1425, after the death of Benedict XIII, also an antipope. The church was still suffering the effects of the Western Schism. The official pope was Martin V, and Clement VIII was an antipope, so Benedict XIV became counter-antipope. He was called the "hidden pope" because of his intense secrecy. Garnier was succeeded by Jean Carrier, who also called himself Benedict XIV.
