Andrew Young, Jr. was born on March 12, 1932, in New Orleans, Louisiana. A pastor at several black churches in the South, Young was active in the civil-rights movement and came in contact with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., with who he led Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Young became a member of Congerss in 1972 and was twice reelected. In 1981, Young was elected mayor of Atlanta and served through 1989.
