Andrew Hamilton was a lawyer who defended John Peter Zenger in a case that marked the first victory for freedom of the press in the American colonies.
Andrew Hamilton migrated to Virginia as an indentured servant and was admitted to practice law in the colony in 1703. He became an attorney in Philadelphia and was appointed city recorder in 1727. When New York printer, John Peter Zenger, was tried for seditious libel against the colony's governor, William Cosby, Hamilton defended Zenger and won the case. Hamilton died in 1741.
