Profile

Mostly self-educated, André Marie Ampère's father was guillotined during the French Revolution. After witnessing an experiment by Ørsted, Ampère developed theory to understand the relationship between electricity and magnetism. In recognition of his contribution to modern electrical science, the "ampere" was established as a standard unit of electrical measurement. He died in 1836.
