André Breton was born on February 19, 1896, in Tinchebray, France. Influenced by psychiatry and the Symbolist movement, he wrote poetry using the automatic-writing technique. In 1924, he wrote the first Manifeste du surréalisme (Surrealist Manifesto), which provided a definition of Surrealism, of which he was the chief promoter. Breton spent World War II in the United States and returned to France in 1946. He died in 1966.
