André Breton was a French writer, editor and critic who was a key figure in the Dada and Surrealist art movements.
André Breton was born on February 19, 1896, in Tinchebray, France. Influenced by psychiatry and the Symbolist movement, he wrote poetry using the automatic-writing technique. In 1924, he wrote the first Manifeste du surréalisme (Surrealist Manifesto), which provided a definition of Surrealism, of which he was the chief promoter. Breton spent World War II in the United States and returned to France in 1946. He died in 1966.
