Alonzo J. Ransier biography

Alonzo J. Ransier was born on January 3, 1834 in Charleston, South Carolina. He was born a free black and received a rudimentary education. His career in public life began after the American Civil War. In 1870 he was elected lieutenant governor of South Carolina and the to Congress in 1872. In the House he fought for a civil rights bill. He died in 1882 spending his final years as a day laborer.
