Alexis Mikhailovich, also known as Alexis I of Russia, was born on March 9, 1629, in Moscow, Russia. The son of the first Romanov monarch of Russia, Alexis took the throne at age 16 and passed a code of laws that defined serfdom. He was married twice, first to Mariya Ilinichna Miloslavskaya (with whom he had two sons, the tsars Fyodor III and Ivan V), then to Natalya Kirillovna Naryshkina, whose son became Peter I the Great. He died on February 8, 1676.
