Alexei Petrovich was born circa February 18, 1690, in Moscow, Russia. Although he obeyed his father, Peter the Great, Alexei became increasingly hostile toward him as he grew older. After Peter's second wife provided another male heir, Alexei was offered the choice of reforming his behavior or becoming a monk. Alexei fled to Vienna, but was wooed back only to be condemned to death. He died on July 7, 1718, after suffering days of torture.
