Alexander Crummell biography

Alfred Crummell was born in 1819 in New York, NY. He was denied admission to the General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal church because of his race, but he studied privately and became an minister in 1844. Crummell went to Liberia as a missionary and became a strong proponent of Liberian nationalism. He returned to the United States and founded the American Negro Academy. He died in 1898.
