Profile

Alben W. Barkley was born Nov. 24, 1877, in Graves County, Kentucky. In 1912 Barkley was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, serving seven successive terms (1913–1927) before his election to the Senate in 1926, where he served until 1949. He was the oldest man to be elected vice president in 1948. He served for four years, after which he sought 1952 presidential nomination but withdrew.
