Al Smith was born Dec. 30, 1873, in New York, N.Y. His political career was launched in 1895, when Tammany Hall appointed him an investigator in the office of the New York City commissioner of jurors. He then served in the state assembly. In the 1918 gubernatorial race the following year, he was elected by a narrow margin. He was again elected governor in 1923 and served three more terms.
