Ahmadou Ahidjo was born in August 1924, in Garoua, Cameroon. In the first Cameroon government, he was vice premier and minister of the interior; when the first premier fell in 1958, he formed his own party, the Cameroonian Union. His initial program included immediate internal autonomy. He was able to attain independence in 1960 and the unification with the southern British Cameroons in 1961.
