Biologist A. D. Hershey was born Dec. 4, 1908, in Owosso, Michigan. In 1945 he demonstrated the occurrence of spontaneous mutation in both bacteriophages and the host. The next year, he discovered the occurrence of genetic recombination in phages. He is most noted for the so-called blender experiment that he performed with Martha Chase in 1952.
