Born May 6, 1870, in San Jose, California, American banker A.P. Giannini founded the Bank of Italy in 1904. It later became the Bank of America—which, by the 1930s, was the world's largest commercial bank. By the time of his death Bank of America had more than 500 branch banks, with more than $6 billion in deposits. He was a major pioneer of branch banking.
