Profile

In 1969, Yasser Araft was named chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). After years of violence involving Israel, border disputes and the liberation movement, in 1993 Arafat signed an agreement with Israel aimed at self-rule for his people. Despite winning the Nobel Peace Prize for the treaty, the terms never could be implemented, and Arafat died in diplomatic isolation.
