It has been superseded as new evidence on the assassination of President Kennedy has emerged. Manchester died before he could complete the third and final volume of his biography of Winston Churchill, The Last Lion: The Defender of the Realm.

His major work is The Death of a President (1967), written at the request of Jacqueline Kennedy. A landmark in reportage, it received mixed reviews and sold in millions, but has subsequently been superseded as new evidence on the assassination of President Kennedy has emerged. He died before he could complete the third and final volume of his biography of Winston Churchill, The Last Lion: The Defender of the Realm.
