Born on December 10/12, 1805, in Newburyport, Massachusetts, William Lloyd Garrison was a convert from the American Colonization Society, which advocated the return of free blacks to Africa, to the principle of 'immediate emancipation.' He propagated his message via The Liberator, an abolitionist newspaper he started, and found his mission complete with the Emancipation Proclamation.
