Willem Duisenberg worked for the International Monetary Fund (1965–9), was director of the Netherlands Bank (1969–70), and was a professor of macro-economics at the University of Amsterdam. He served as finance minister in the Den Uyl cabinet (Partij van de Arbeid, Labour; 1973–7) and from 1977 as director of the RABO Bank. He also became first president of the European Central Bank (1998–2003).
