After retiring, Wayne Gould spent 6 years developing a computer program that could mass-produce Sudoku puzzles. Gould’s program generated the logic-based number-placing puzzles in bulk, enabling Sudoku to appear in daily newspapers throughout Europe and America. He has been selling his puzzles to newspapers since the fall of 2005, causing an enormous spike in their popularity throughout the world.

Judge, computer programmer. Born in 1945 in New Zealand, Gould was a lawyer for 13 years in his native country before moving to Hong Kong in 1982. In 1993, he became Chief District Judge, a position he held until his retirement in 1997. After retiring, Gould spent six years developing a computer program that could mass produce Sudoku puzzles. The logic-based number-placing puzzles are believed to have been invented in America in 1979 and became popular in Japan in the mid-1980s. Gould??s program generated the puzzles in bulk, enabling Sudoku to appear in daily newspapers throughout Europe and America. He has been selling his puzzles to newspapers since the fall of 2005, causing an enormous spike in their popularity throughout the world.
