Although Warren Beatty didn't make the cut as one of Joan Collins' four husbands, they were briefly engaged. Seen here in this 1960 photo, the sassy Collins has said this about her former beau: "He was the only man to get to the mirror faster than me."

Natalie Wood enjoyed a forbidden romance onscreen with Beatty in the 1961 classic Splendor in the Grass. They also carried on off-screen after Wood's first marriage to Robert Wagner ended. The actress later denied that the romance was the cause of her marital problems. Clearly their onscreen chemistry worked, since Wood took home an Oscar for her performance.

Beatty wasn't only romantically linked to American actresses. He had a dalliance with Tunisian actress Claudia Cardinale, who starred Stateside in Pink Panther. Like Beatty, the European sex symbol was known for her high-profile romances. Her take about her love life: "I had a lot of friends."

This British starlet teamed up with Beatty in the 1966 casino caper Kaleidoscope. When The Daily Mail asked about her former co-star, York said, "Warren is a teddy bear. Though I used to be annoyed when the teddy-bear hugs turned to bottom pinches."

French dancer and actress Leslie Caron, famous for her roles in An American in Paris and Gigi, didn't hold back about Beatty in her memoir "Thank Heaven." Julie Christie appeared with Beatty in the romantic comedy Shampoo. They were thought to have been in a relationship (with some on again/off again moments) for seven years. In an interview, the actress described him as "the most beautiful and at the same time the most nervous person I have ever known."

Michelle Phillips, lead singer of the '60s band The Mamas and the Papas, was married to the group's guru John Phillips. She was also briefly married to actor Dennis Hopper and was rumored to have spent time with Jack Nicholson as well. And amidst all those affairs of the heart, Philips also supposedly carried on a romance with Beatty.

Model-turned-actress Lauren Hutton is seen here getting cozy with Beatty at a Richard Avedon gallery show in 1975. That same year, a People article linked Hutton to another of Beatty's girlfriends, Julie Christie. Hutton found the gossip "humorous."

Jane Fonda had her very first screen test with Warren Beatty (seen here with him in 1978). After a love scene in which they kissed, Fonda said she didn't remember anything about the smooch because she was so nervous. In a speech she gave when he won the American Film Institute's Lifetime Achievement Award, she said, "We became friends and nothing else. I thought he was gay."

Warren Beatty and Diane Keaton starred in the 1981 film Reds, which earned Beatty a Best Director Oscar. When recalling their relationship in her autobiography Then Again, Keaton said that Beatty could "wow her with wild acts of generosity that played right into her daddy issues. Still, she says, 'I wanted to be Warren Beatty, not love him.'"

Beatty's appreciation of French film starlets didn't stop in the '60s; here he is with French actress and singer Isabelle Adjani in 1985. Adjani was supposedly linked to Beatty in the mid-'80s, but then she moved on to Daniel Day-Lewis, and they had a son together.

When Warren Beatty played iconic comic-strip detective Dick Tracy in the movie of the same name, he took on another difficult role: being the boyfriend of co-star Madonna.  Moviegoers got to see a glimpse of this odd coupling in the 1991 documentary Madonna: Truth or Dare.

Barbara Streisand and Beatty may have crossed paths long before this photo taken in 2005. In 1972, Beatty talked Streisand (who often avoided the live stage due to stage fright) into performing at Senator George McGovern's political fundraiser for president. Streisand called Beatty "persuasive" and "impressive."

In the 1991 movie Bugsy, Beatty was a gangster and Annette Bening was his moll. Although the film wasn't a box office smash, he met the leading lady of his life. They married in 1992, had four children together and co-starred again in the 1994 movie Love Affair, a remake of An Affair to Remember.
