Born on October 15, 70 B.C., in Andes (near Mantua), Italy, Virgil's poetry became greatly admired by the Romans with his famous poem, the Aeneid, which is still regarded as a literary masterpiece today. Soon after his death, Virgil was imitated by the younger poet Ovid, and this process continued throughout the Silver Age. A testament to this admiration can be found in Dante's epic poem, Divine Comedy. In Divine Comedy, Virgil serves as Dante's guide as he travels through Hell to the gates of Heaven. Virgil (also known as Vergil) died in Brundisium, Italy, on September 21, 19 B.C.
