Thomas Pendergast was active in municipal politics in Kansas City, becoming the political boss of the city's Democrats by 1916. His political machine dominated city and state politics for 25 years and influenced national Democratic conventions. In the 1930s he was attacked by opponents for permitting corrupt practices. He was convicted of income-tax evasion and served one year in prison.
