Born in Mount Willing, Alabama, on February 9, 1912, Thomas Hinman Moorer was a U.S. Navy admiral. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1933, and completed his naval aviation training three years later, in 1936. He flew with a patrol squadron in World War II and narrowly escaped death in February 1942, when his plane and rescue ship were torpedoed. After working his way up through the ranks of the U.S. Navy, Moorer commanded the Pacific Fleet (1965-7),
and then served as chief of naval operations (1967-70) and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1970-4). He died on February 5, 2004, in Bethesda, Maryland.
US naval officer Thomas Hinman Moorer was born on February 9, 1912, in Mount Willing, Alabama. During World War II he narrowly escaped death twice - his airplane was shot down and the ship that rescued him was torpedoed (1942). He was commander of the Pacific Fleet (1965-7), chief of naval operations (1967-'70) and chairman of the joint chiefs-of-staff (1970-4) before he retired in 1974.
