Born on August 29, 1929, in Gravesend, England, Thomas William Gunn published his first book of poems in 1954, The Fighting Terms. He continued to publish work over the following decades, including Touch, To the Air and The Man With Night Sweats, exploring themes of sexuality, intimacy, drugs and death. The recipients of laurels like the Levinson Prize and Rockefeller Award, Gunn died on April 25, 2004.
Poet Thomson Gunn was born in Gravesend, Kent, England, on August 29, 1929. Gunn went to California to teach English at Stanford and Berkeley in 1954 after studying at Cambridge University. His often erotic poems are written in an intriguing variety of regular and free forms. Volumes include Fighting Terms (1954), Jack Straw's Castle (1976), The Passages of Joy (1982), The Man With Night Sweats (1992), Shelf Life (1993) and Frontiers of Gossip (1997).
