Born in 497, Theodora was empress of the Byzantine Empire, wife of Emperor Justinian I and perhaps the most influential and powerful woman in the Byzantine Empire's history. Little is known of her early life, but the Secret History of Procopius of Caesarea probably provides the best explanation. She was one of the first leaders to underscore the rights of women and is a saint in the Orthodox Church.
