Born on November 24, 1912, in Austin, Texas, Teddy Wilson studied music at the historically black Tuskegee Institute, later becoming one of the most influential jazz pianists of his time. In the 1930s, Wilson made a number of recordings featuring Billie Holiday, which are considered classics of small-group swing. In 1935, he joined Benny Goodman's trio. After 1940, Wilson worked primarily as a leader of small ensembles. He died in 1986.
