Ted Hughes was born on August 17, 1930, in Yorkshire, England. In 1956, he met future wife Sylvia Plath at a launch party for a literary magazine he cofounded. He published his first book, The Hawk in the Rain, a year later. He left Plath in 1962 and remarried in 1970. By the time he died on October 28, 1998 in London, England, he had written more than a dozen books, including poetry and non-fiction.
