He returned to the United States in July 2012, and the following month, created a YouTube channel that linked to various videos, two of which were included under a category entitled "Terrorists."
According to The New York Times, Tamerlan began an application for U.S. citizenship in September 2012.
On April 15, 2013, two bombs were detonated near the finish line of the Boston Marathon—one approximately four hours after the start of the race, and the other just seconds later. Three people were killed during the attacks, and more than 170 were injured.
Three days later, the FBI announced that Tamerlan Tsarnaev and his brother, Dzhokhar, were suspects in the case, and released photos and videos of the brothers. That evening, police were called to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus, where a 26-year-old university police officer, Sean Collier, had been fatally shot. Media reports covering the incident claimed that the Tsarnaev brothers were believed to be involved in the shooting.
Following a police chase in the early hours of April 19, 2013, Tamerlan Tsarnaev was shot and killed by officers at the scene. He was 26 years old. The brothers had reportedly carjacked a vehicle and left it in Watertown, Massachusetts, where a gunflght with police ensued. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was captured later that day, after reportedly hiding in a boat in the yard of a private property in Watertown.
