Stone Phillips was born in Texas City, Texas, on December 2, 1954. His television career began in 1986, as a correspondent on the news magazine show 20/20, guest-hosting on other programs including Good Morning America. In 1992, Phillips became a co-host of the show Dateline NBC. NBC did not renew Phillips's contract in 2007, citing financial strain.

Television journalist. Born Stone Stockton Phillips on December 2, 1954, in Texas City, Texas. The son of an engineer and a schoolteacher, Stone Phillips has emerged as one of today's leading television journalists. He spent much of his childhood enjoying outdoor activities and playing with his siblings. The family moved to St. Louis, Missouri, when he was around 10 years old.
In 1973, Stone Phillips began his studies at Yale University. A strong athlete, he played quarterback on the school's football team. Not too long after graduating in 1977, Phillips got his start in journalism, working his way up from newsroom assistant to producer and on-air reporter at a local television station in Georgia. He didn't have to pay his dues for long??he was hired by ABC News in 1979. While there, Phillips held several posts, including editor, producer, and correspondent. He tackled a number of difficult assignments, including reporting from Beirut during the 1982 conflict with Israel. He landed his first news magazine post in 1986 when he joined the staff of 20/20 with Barbara Walters and Hugh Downs as a correspondent.
In the early 1990s, Stone Phillips made the move to NBC News and the anchor chair for their news magazine Dateline. For 15 years, he conducted investigations and interviewing key newsmakers, ranging from businessman Donald Trump to serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer to late Russian president Boris Yeltsin. Phillips originally co-hosted the show with Jane Pauley, but later was joined by Ann Curry of The Today Show.
In a cost-cutting move, NBC News declined to renew his multimillion-dollar contract in 2007. At the time, Phillips released a statement to the press, saying that "It's been a wonderful 15 years. I'm profoundly appreciative of the many friends and colleagues, past and present, who have been a part of the Dateline family."
Stone Phillips and his wife Debra have one child, Daniel Streeter.
