Stephen Crane was an American novelist whose first book, Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, tells the story of a abused slum girl's descent into prostitution and her suicide. After befriending a influential critic, his 1895 work, The Red Badge of Courage, earned great praise brought him international fame as a war writer. After nearly drowning off Cuba, he wrote the short story, "The Open Boat."
