Stamford Raffles was an English administrator and traveler who oversaw the establishment of Singapore.

Synopsis

Born on a ship on July 6, 1781, near Port Morant, Jamaica, Thomas Stamford Raffles went on to work for the East India Company and eventually oversaw the British forces that occupied Java. Raffles later established the port city Singapore and recorded much information about Eastern cultures. He died on July 5, 1826.
