Profile

Spartacus was the most notable leader during the Gladiatorial War (73–71), an uprising of slaves against Rome. A Thracian by birth, Spartacus was made a slave by the Roman Army. He ran away and joined a small band that eventually grew to 90,000. They continual defeated Roman forces. Surviving records are often contradictory, but he is used as a symbol for oppressed people fighting for freedom.
