Shawn Stockman was born on September 26, 1972, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and later became famous in his city and worldwide as a member of the all-male ensemble Boyz II Men. This Grammy Award-winning quartet dominated the charts, especially in the late 1980s and early '90s, with ballads, R&B songs and dance hits. Stockman, now a married dad, has also enjoyed a successful television career as a judge on The Sing-Off.
"At this point, there are no egos: We know we all built this thing together and we're all in it together."
JoAnn Stockman and Thurman Sanders became the proud parents of Shawn Patrick Stockman on September 26, 1972, on the southwest side of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Among the young Stockman's big family of 10 kids, he stood out for his serious singing skills. By the age of 9, he was touring with the Philadelphia Boys Choir.
Shawn Stockman was admitted to the Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts, where he met Nathan Morris and Marc Nelson, who were forming a group called Boyz II Men. Stockman, Wanya Morris and Michael McCary completed this boy band, which became known for unbelievable harmonizing. The guys captured the attention of singer Michael Bevins of Bell Biv DeVoe (and formerly of New Edition). He signed on to produce their music. Soon, they were in a recording studio, except for Nelson, who bailed out.
In 1991, the quartet released the album Cooleyhighharmony; its dance track "Motownphilly" reached the top five on the pop charts and No. 1 on the R&B charts. Another hit, "It's the End of the Road," broke a record held by Elvis Presley since 1956 when it topped the charts for 13 weeks. In 1994, Boyz II Men pulled off another feat when "On Bended Knee" replaced another of their songs, "I'll Make Love to You," for the No. 1 spot on the Hot 100 chart—a triumph previously achieved only by the Beatles and Elvis.
Stockman is also enjoying television stardom as a judge on NBC's The Sing-Off, an a cappella group competition show hosted by Nick Lachey. Married since 2001 to wife Sharonda Jones, Stockman is a dedicated dad of three. One of his sons has autism, which motivated Stockman to launch the nonprofit organization Micah's Voice in 2012 to help support families dealing with the same medical condition.
Next up for the busy family man and music producer was "The Package Tour," a much-anticipated concert series that began in the summer of 2013, featuring Boyz II Men as well as fellow boy bands New Kids On The Block and 98 Degrees.
