Profile

Sergei Diaghilev was born on March 31, 1872, in Selischi, Russia. After abandoning a law career, he started writing critical essays about art. After joining the Maryinsky Theater, he started supervising operas and ballets. In 1909, he started the Ballet Russes, which went on to tour all over the world and was a catalyst for the creation of the Royal Ballet. He died on August 19, 1929, in Venice, Italy.
