Septima Poinsette Clark was born on May 3, 1898, in Charleston, South Carolina, and became a teacher for her home state. She further pursued her studies at several universities and worked for African-American teachers to receive equal pay. She did nation-changing work over the years for the NAACP, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and the Voter Education Project. Clark died on December 15, 1987, in Johns Island, South Carolina.
