Born Leroy Robert Paige on July 7, c. 1906, in Mobile, Alabama, Satchel Paige was a larger-than-life figure in the Negro Leagues who signed to the Cleveland Indians in 1948, making him the oldest rookie to ever play the game. The team won pennant and World Series victories that year. Paige also pitched for the Kansas City Athletics in 1965, which made him the oldest to pitch in the majors.
