Born on May 1, 1852, in Petilla de Aragón, Navarre, Spain, Santiago Ramón y Cajal studied photography and medicine before becoming an anatomy and histology professor in the late 1800s. His groundbreaking tissue staining techniques led to an unprecedented understanding of nerve structures and neuron transmissions, with the researcher receiving the Nobel Prize in 1906. He died in Madrid, Spain, on October 18, 1934.
